PHA is designed to be consumed by microorganisms at end of life. Biodegradability is verified through TÜV Austria OK Biodegradable and OK Compost testing, and each certificate applies to a specific product and set of test conditions. Request the certificate for the exact item you plan to buy.

PLA is made from plant sugars and is certified for industrial composting, which needs sustained high heat. PHA is made by bacterial fermentation and, for qualifying products, is also certified for home compost, soil and marine biodegradation. We use PLA where commercial composting is the realistic end of life, such as clamshells, and PHA where broader breakdown matters.

Qualifying PHA products carry the TÜV Austria OK Compost Home certification. Certification is product-specific, so confirm the certificate for the item you are buying before making a home compostability claim to your customers.

Qualifying PHA products carry the TÜV Austria OK Biodegradable Marine certification, meaning they biodegrade in marine conditions under test. Real-world speed depends on temperature and microbial activity, and it is not a license to litter.
