Compostable cups and lids used for takeaway service in a restaurant

What restaurants use every day

Restaurants, cafes, caterers and delivery kitchens depend on disposable packaging: cups and lids, straws, utensils, sauce and portion cups, takeout containers, pizza supports and bags. Most of it is conventional petroleum-based plastic that is used once and discarded within minutes.

Replacing it is a visible sustainability step, but it only works if the new packaging performs through a busy service and the claims you make are accurate.

Start with the highest-volume items

Straws and stirrers

PHA straws and stirrers are an easy first step. Many operators also reduce use by serving straws on request.

Cups and lids

Compostable cups and lids cover cold drinks and, depending on the product, hot drinks. Confirm temperature suitability for each item.

Utensils

PHA utensils replace plastic forks, spoons and knives for takeaway and delivery.

Portion and takeout packaging

PHA souffle cups suit sauces and sides, PLA clamshell boxes suit cold or room-temperature takeaway, and PHA pizza savers replace plastic pizza tripods.

Performance: heat, grease and moisture

Food service packaging is judged by what it does under real conditions. Hot soups, oily sauces, condensation from cold drinks and long delivery times all test packaging. Different materials and formulations behave differently. PLA is rigid and clear but softens at fairly low temperatures, while PHA formulations are used for more demanding items.

Do not rely on material names alone. Request samples and test with your menu, your serving temperatures and your delivery times.

Food contact and documentation

Packaging that touches food must meet the food-contact rules that apply where you operate. These requirements are separate from compostability. Ask your supplier for the documentation for the exact product and have your compliance or food safety lead review it before roll-out. We provide product documentation on request, and we do not make food-safety claims beyond the documents we can supply.

Disposal: make the claim match the route

Compostable packaging only reduces waste if it is actually composted. If your city offers commercial composting, items certified for industrial composting can be collected with food scraps. If not, check what the certificate allows and what local rules require. Label bins clearly so staff and guests separate compostable items from general waste, and never mix them into recycling.

Our PHA products are tested by TÜV Austria and qualifying items carry certificates such as OK Compost Home and OK Biodegradable Soil. The certificate for each item defines the conditions it covers.

Cost, supply and wholesale

Compostable packaging typically costs more per unit than conventional plastic, so look at the whole picture: reduced single-use volume, customer response and consolidated purchasing across locations. Wholesale pricing depends on item and quantity, and custom or co-branded formats are available for many products. For multi-unit groups, standardizing on a small set of items makes supply simpler.

Questions restaurant operators ask

Will compostable cups and lids work for hot drinks?

It depends on the product. Confirm temperature suitability for the specific cup and lid and test with your drink.

Can customers compost these at home?

Only if the certificate for that exact item covers home composting. PHA products can carry OK Compost Home certificates; PLA items are certified for industrial composting.

How do we handle delivery and takeout?

Test containers with your hottest and oiliest menu items and with your actual delivery times, and request documentation for food contact.

Can we get custom-printed packaging?

Custom and co-branded options are available for many products. Describe your requirements in the quote form.

Training and communication

Even the best packaging fails if it ends up in the wrong bin. Train front-of-house and back-of-house staff on which items are compostable, where they go and how to explain the change to guests. Place clear signage at disposal points for dine-in service and add a short note on takeaway packaging or menus.

Keep claims precise. Say what the item is made of, and name the disposal route only if it exists in your area. Customers respond well to honest, specific messages and are quick to distrust vague ones.

Choosing packaging by menu type

Menu type shapes what works. A coffee shop is mostly cups, lids, stirrers and straws. A pizzeria needs boxes and pizza supports. A quick-service or delivery kitchen needs hot-holding containers, utensils and sauce cups. A catering company needs trays, cutlery and cold items.

Map your menu to packaging formats, then test the most demanding item in each category. If the hardest case works, the rest usually will too.

Cafes and bars

Cups, lids, stirrers and straws. Test hot and cold drinks separately.

Pizzerias

PHA pizza savers and takeout boxes, tested with hot, oily product.

Quick service and delivery

Utensils, souffle cups and clamshells, tested over your real delivery times.

Caterers

Utensils and cold-food containers in the quantities your events require.

Measuring results

Track the items replaced, the spend per cover and the customer feedback for the first 60 to 90 days. Note any complaints about leaks, softness or fit, and discuss them with your supplier, since many issues are solved by switching to a different size or formulation.

Share results with your team. When staff understand why the change happened and see that it works, they handle the packaging more carefully and explain it better to guests. Revisit the product mix each year and extend the program to other items once the first phase is stable.
